Treatment guide
Each massage modality serves a distinct purpose. Here's what you need to know before booking.
Relaxation massage — often called Swedish massage — uses long, gliding strokes and gentle kneading to activate the parasympathetic nervous system. The pressure is light to medium. The goal is nervous system regulation: lowering cortisol, reducing mental stress, and promoting a state of deep physical calm. This is not the right choice if you have specific muscular tightness or structural complaints — but it's the correct tool if you're mentally depleted and need genuine rest.
Remedial massage is clinically targeted treatment. Qualified remedial therapists assess posture, range of motion, and muscular patterns before treating. The approach is outcome-focused: identifying the root cause of a complaint and addressing it methodically over one or more sessions. This is the correct choice for neck and shoulder tension, lower back complaints, headaches driven by muscular tightening, and post-injury rehabilitation. Look for HICAPS-enabled clinics — private health rebates often apply.
Deep tissue work targets the inner layers of muscles and connective tissue using slower strokes and sustained pressure. It can be mildly uncomfortable in areas of genuine tightness — this is expected and productive, not a sign that something is wrong. The correct choice when you're physically resilient and carrying specific, locatable muscular tightness. Not the correct choice when you're mentally depleted or your nervous system is already under stress.
Couples massage involves two people receiving treatments simultaneously in the same room, typically from two separate therapists. The quality of the shared experience depends enormously on the quality of the couples suite infrastructure — a genuine double room with appropriate ambience and post-treatment space is very different from simply two standard treatment rooms next to each other. Best suited for special occasions, anniversaries, birthdays, and gifts where the shared atmosphere is part of the value.
Pregnancy massage is specifically adapted for the physiological changes of pregnancy — positioning, pressure, and technique are all adjusted. It effectively addresses common pregnancy-related discomforts including lower back pain, sciatica, swollen ankles, and sleep disruption. Always book with a practitioner who has specific pregnancy massage training, and disclose your pregnancy and trimester when booking. Most clinics advise against massage in the first trimester.
Foot massage and reflexology range from simple tired-foot relief to structured reflexology that applies pressure to specific points believed to correspond to different organs and body systems. Quality foot massage studios operate at a range of price points and are often the most accessible entry point to regular massage for first-time clients. Richmond and Surry Hills have strong concentrations of reputable studios.
Luxury spa treatments combine massage with aesthetic treatments, advanced skincare, hot stone therapy, aromatherapy, and similar modalities in premium, purpose-designed environments. The environment is as much the product as the treatment itself — these are experiences as much as therapies. South Yarra and Bondi Junction lead in this category within our coverage area.
