Hamburg’s origin is a fortress on the Alster and the Elbe. The Hanseatic port that followed never stopped booking recovery for people who work strange hours.

Hammaburg was a ninth-century fort. The later free city lived on water: warehouses, the Speicherstadt, then HafenCity’s new brick and glass. Thai massage arrived into a town that already understood shift work and damp winters. Studios in the Innenstadt, St Pauli’s edges and the wealthier west serve different clocks.
